A Christmas carol is a popular type of song with Christmas or winter themed lyrics, that is traditionally sung in the period leading up to Christmas.

Types of carols include hymns (songs with a Christian religious message) with lyrics that celebrate the birth of Jesus, and non-religious songs with a secular theme such as wassailing songs, which date back to the middle ages when poor villagers would sing songs at Christmas to wish rich lords and ladies a merry Christmas and good health for the coming year, in return for food and drink.
